Ant (Formicidae) is a large and widely distributed group occurring everywhere, often in considerable numbers. Ant colonies vary greatly in size, from a dozen to many thousands of individuals. Most of them nest in the soil and in cracks and crevices of buildings, making it difficult to locate their colony.
In Singapore, the 4 kinds of common ants are:
Ghost Ants ( Tapinoma Melanocephalum )
Crazy Ants ( Paratrechina Longicornis )
Singapore Ants ( Monomorium Destructor )
Weaver Ants ( Oecophylla Smaragdina )
As common ants do not carry diseases, they are classified as pest. Ants are true scavengers of the earth and their small size allow them to infest seeming sealed containers of food or any spillage of food areas. Some species inflict painful bites that develop into sores when in contact with them.
