About Cockroaches

Cockroaches or roaches are an extremely successful group of insects and have undergone very little morphological changes through ages. There are more than 4500 species of cockroaches with the majority of no economical significance. Cockroaches that are considered pest account for less than 1% of the the total number of species. They all have the same general appearance; body oval and flattened with three distinct body parts, head, thorax and abdomen.

Most roaches are drab brown to black to suit its nocturnal behavior and habitats and predominantly tropical. Some, (the pest species) have occupied the artificial environment (building, sewers, ships) created by man, who has been largely responsible for their spread. Cockroaches are active at night and hide in the day. They can be found in cracks, doorframes, drains bathrooms and kitchen etc. They move freely from building to buildings and from drain, sewer, toilets to human habitations. Cockroaches feed on almost any organic matter but prefer starchy or sugary types of food.

Cockroaches regurgitate some of their partly digested food and defaecate often while feeding thus causing contamination as their movement and feeding habits bring them into contact with various pathogenic organisms. Studies have also shown that cockroaches associated allergies are caused by inhaling cockroaches allergens derive from faeces, saliva and dead bodies of cockroaches. The prevalent pest species found in Singapore are:

American Cockroach - Periplaneta Americana
German Cockroach - Blattella Germanica
Smooth Cockroach - Symploce Pallens
Brown Banded Cockroach - Supella Longipalpa

There are also Periplaneta Brunnea Burmeister (Brown Cockroach), Periplaneta Australasiae (Australian Cockroach), Neostylopyga Rhombifolia (Harlequein Cockroach) that are moderately prevalent in Singapore.
